Globetrotter visits children’s rehab
BETHANY — A Harlem Globetrotter dazzled patients at The Children’s Center Rehabilitation Hospital.
Hawk Thomas with the all-star team met last week with patients in the hospital’s Complex Care Unit and the Pediatric Medical Rehabilitation Unit.
Thomas is a member of the Globetrotters’ Smile Patrol, a hospital outreach program designed to lift the spirits of fans unable to attend a Globetrotters game, according to a news release.
“Even the patients who have been through something so traumatic have smiles on their faces. They’re bright, lovely smiles, so that’s something I like to see,” Thomas said.
Thomas showed off his ball-handling skills and signed autographs.
Thomas surprised patient Bella Baldwin and her family with free tickets to the Globetrotters’ recent game in Oklahoma City.
As a basketball player with the Greater Oklahoma Disabled Sports Association, Bella said it was fun playing wheelchair basketball with a

Court being built
Patients and staff at the hospital are especially excited for future visits from the Globetrotters, since the hospital is building a new basketball court. Construction is underway on a $22 million four-story addition and a new Activities of Daily Living Center.
“The center will include a half-court gymnasium for activities like wheelchair basketball, and an elevated stage for community performances,” said Melissa Richey, hospital spokeswoman.
