CLASS OF 2017 OFF TO STRONG START

The number of state football prospects in the Class of 2017 with Division I offers is already nearing 20 just two weeks after National Signing Day for the 2016 class.

The 2017 football recruiting class is off to a wildly strong start around the Oklahoma City area, and it continued on Monday.

Putnam City West’s Nick Robinson picked up his first Division I scholarshi­p offer, with Toledo coming after the 6-foot-4 junior wide receiver.

And a name rapidly becoming well-known on the recruiting circuit, John Marshall defensive back Justin Broiles, upped his offer total to 13 with one from Memphis on Monday.

That comes just days after Oklahoma and Auburn offered the 6-foot, 170-pound cornerback.

CLASS 2A No. 1 DALE TAKES DOWN CLASS 4A No. 2 NEWCASTLE

A heavyweigh­t girls basketball matchup between Class 4A No. 2 Newcastle and Class 2A No. 1 Dale didn’t disappoint

Monday night.

Taylor Thompson hit a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left to propel Dale 58-56 road win, the Pirates’ 16th straight entering the playoffs.

Thompson finished with eight points and five rebounds. Hannah Ash tied her career high with 23 points, while Dani Manning added 11 points, five rebounds and four assists for Dale (24-1).

Newcastle (20-3) had won 12 straight, including a big win Saturday over Class 3A No. 1 Washington.

SPRING SPORTS MEDIA DAY WEDNESDAY

The Oklahoman’s annual Spring Sports Media Day is set for Wednesday at Bishop McGuinness High School.

The event will be held in the lobby of the gymnasium, beginning at 3:30 p.m. and ending at 7:30.

The school is at 801 NW 50 Street in Oklahoma City. Coaches and athletes can enter from the Interstate 44 service road off Western Avenue. Each Oklahoma Cityarea high school participat­ing in baseball, soccer, track, golf, tennis and slowpitch softball is encouraged to bring athletes to meet The Oklahoman’s high school coverage team for interviews, videos and photos that will be used throughout the upcoming season.

GOLF HALL OF FAME OFFERING SCHOLARSHI­PS

The Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame will award two $5,000 scholarshi­ps in 2016, one to a male and one to a female who are going to attend an Oklahoma four-year college or university.

Also eligible are students already enrolled in a qualifying college who have an interest in golf.

The specific eligibilit­y criteria and the applicatio­n form for the scholarshi­ps are available at www.oklahomago­lfhof.org. The winners must have an interest in and relationsh­ip with the sport of golf, though not necessaril­y as a member of a competitiv­e team.

Deadline for entry is April 15. Winners will be announced by June 1.
