BALL SECURITY
Sooner quarterbacks threw four interceptions in the 2015 spring game. They threw none Saturday. The passers clearly were more comfortable with Lincoln Riley’s offense, which is in its second OU season. But it was more than that. Kyler Murray and Austin Kendall just arrived on campus. They can’t be too comfortable with the offense. But ball security was high. That’s a good sign for 2016.
DEFENSIVE COMMUNICATION
Busts were few. The second-team defense gave up a 33-yard touchdown pass from Kyler Murray when Jordan Smallwood got wide open behind the secondary, but there were few other breakdowns.
MIDFIELD LOGO
It’s become an OU spring game tradition — the state of Oklahoma, colored red, at midfield, with a white interlocking OU in the middle. So let this be our annual plea to carry over the midfield logo to autumn Saturdays.
PASS RUSH
With virtually no blitzes, the OU pass rushers still put decent pressure on the quarterbacks. They were helped by a quick whistle that didn’t allow for much scrambling by the mobile QBs, but still, not a bad performance in the post-Eric Striker era.
RECEIVERS
What appears to be a weakness going into the season didn’t present itself that way. Of the three drops, two were by tailback Daniel Brooks. Dede Westbrook had a big play, a 65-yard reception when the coverage was solid. Michiah Quick had a 52-yard TD reception from Murray. A.D. Miller and Jordan Smallwood made nice plays. Bob Stoops seemed genuinely more excited about this corps than the 2015 version, which included Sterling Shepard.
BOWL FEEL
The stadium renovation is progressing nicely, with even a top-off ceremony on Friday and a tree placed atop the steel to represent the highest point of the south addition. But the upper corners aren’t filled in yet, making it a little difficult to get a precise feel for the stadium’s new bowled-in status.
AUSTIN KENDALL
For a guy whose senior prom hasn’t occurred and playing in front of 40,000 fans, Kendall looked solid. He completed just eight of 17, but the wind was stiff and the only three drops of the day came on Kendall throws. Lincoln Riley lauded Kendall’s poise. If disaster strikes and Baker Mayfield gets injured, Riley will have something to work with.
