The Oklahoman

Aaliyah Wilson, Muskogee

-

Muskogee star Aaliyah Wilson was recently humbled.

An Arkansas signee regarded as one of the top players in the state, Wilson played in the McDonald’s All-American Game, scoring 11 points.

But it was being around the caliber of players in the game that caused her to re-evaluate herself after a stellar career.

Wilson is a member of The Oklahoman’s Super 5 team for a second straight year.

She spoke with The Oklahoman about the McDonald’s game, a nagging knee injury and more.

Q: What stood out to you about this season?

A: Throughout half the season, of course, I was kinda injured. I feel like I didn’t play to my full abilities the whole season, but knowing how much Trena (Mims) and everybody stepped up and did a little bit more than what they usually do. That stood out knowing that they still were able to pick up where I was falling off at.

In the second or third game of the season, I went up for a shot and a girl went under me in kind of a dirty play. It hurt it pretty bad and it still hurts off and on. I was supposed to sit out, but I didn’t. The next tournament was Tournament of Champions. I tried to sit out a couple days, but I couldn’t help it. Of course my mom was getting on to me about it. I might regret it a little bit now, but oh well.

It was a crazy cool atmosphere knowing we were the best of the best in the nation and being around all of those people. You really learn from it. The way people treat you when you go there, it’s always just crazy cool. It was really humbling because I feel like even though you made it that far it’s how you take it. Either you’re going to take it to the head or keep building off of it.

Probably my dad (RuDel). I’ve heard a lot of stories about him and seeing what he can do now at this age, he must have been really nice. 5-11
