Mets starting pitcher deGrom expected to rejoin rotation on Sunday

-

Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom threw 71 pitches in a simulated game in Florida and is on schedule to start Sunday at Atlanta

DeGrom missed his one turn in the rotation because of a sore lat muscle on his right side and another start Tuesday night after he was placed on the family medical emergency list Saturday following the birth of son Jaxon. The infant returned home Monday following a health concern.

DeGrom would pitch against the Braves on Sunday, pushing the other starters back one day for an extra day of rest.

Logan Verrett made his second start in place of deGrom against the Phillies. He’d return to the bullpen when deGrom returns.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE EXTENDED FOR BRAVES’ OLIVERA

Atlanta Braves outfielder Hector Olivera’s paid administrative leave has been extended through May 3 in an agreement by Major League Baseball and the players’ association.

Olivera was arrested on April 13 and charged with assaulting a woman at a hotel outside Washington, D.C. He was charged with assault and battery, a misdemeanor, and bond was set at $10,000.

Under baseball’s domestic violence policy, paid administrative leave is limited to seven days, but management and the union can extended that if both sides agree.

Olivera continues to receive his $4 million salary while on leave.

FORMER PITCHER PAPPAS DIES

Milt Pappas, who won 209 games during his 17-year career with four teams, has died. He was 76.

His widow, Judi Pappas, said Pappas died Tuesday morning of natural causes at his home in the northern Illinois community of Beecher.

The 6-foot-3 right-hander was part of the Baby Birds staff in Baltimore in 1964, a young rotation with great promise. He was an All-Star by 1962 and started the Midsummer Classic in 1965, months before he and two other players were dealt to Cincinnati for future Hall of Famer Frank Robinson. He was sent to Atlanta two years later and to Chicago in 1970.
