Cushing’s offense puts it on top

DISTRICT 3A-6 PREVIEW

Cushing brings back a variety of playmakers on the offensive end to give the Tigers a promising future.

With two receivers standing taller than 6-foot-3, a pair of experienced running backs and a versatile tight end, Cushing coach Barrett Shupe knows it will be important to get the ball to his variety of playmakers.

At running back, both Kory Wiley and Matt Yates got valuable experience last season. Yates, a junior, accounted for 10 touchdowns.

England Honeybuss, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior, and Trey Morris, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound senior, combined for 19 total touchdowns at receiver last year.

And the offensive line returns three starters, led by Hagan Myers at left guard.

The Tigers were 8-2 last year, getting eliminated from the playoffs in a 17-14 loss to Douglass.

“We were disappointed in the outcome last year,” Shupe said. “We have a lot of guys who can make plays. We need to distribute the ball and let them go make plays.”

SENIOR KEY FOR BRISTOW

Brett Jones is entering his fourth year as Bristow’s head coach, and he must feel like he’s had a lot of the same faces around him.

The current senior class has been part of his program from the beginning, and some of them have been starters the whole time.

Ira Hurst at free safety and quarterback, Nate Bradford at linebacker and fullback, and Logan Davis on the offensive and defensive lines all will be fourth-year starters this season.

Scott Marlow is a third-year starter on the lines as well.

Jones expects heavy contributions from the entire senior class, with eight starters returning on each side of the ball.

TYLAR PRESTIDGE-MURRY BACK FOR BEGGS

After getting knocked out of the playoffs in one of last year’s more thrilling postseason games — a 57-56 overtime loss to Berryhill in the first round — Beggs will try to get back to the playoffs in a revamped district.

Leading the way, senior Tylar Prestidge-Murry will be back at quarterback. The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder is a threat both running and passing.
