Food drive nets record number

Oklahoma City University athletes collected a record number of food items for Skyline Ministry during its annual food drive. Student athletes collected more than 20,000 nonperishable food items to help feed the hungry, 2,112 more than last year. The food drive has resulted in more than 89,000 pounds of food for Skyline in the past seven years. Skyline Urban Ministry is a mission outreach of the Oklahoma Conference of the United Methodist Church. Every pound of food received provides about five meals.

Deputies to look for impaired drivers

NORMAN – Cleveland County sheriff’s deputies will be on the lookout for impaired drivers over the New Year’s holiday, as part of the national Holiday Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Program. According to the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office, 170 people died in crashes involving alcohol in Oklahoma in 2015. Sheriff Joe Lester said he wants everyone to celebrate and have a festive time, but he discourages anyone from driving under the influence of alcohol. Anyone planning to drink alcohol needs to have a designated driver. Lester said deputies will be on patrol 24 hours a day during the holiday season, looking for impaired drivers.
