Concert at The Depot to feature Heather Styka
NORMAN — Singer/songwriter Heather Styka will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Jan. 29 at The Depot, 200 S Jones Ave., as part of the ongoing Winter Wind concert series. Tickets are $15.
“These are the sort of songs that take you on a journey and haunt you all the way home,” Depot spokeswoman Nancy McClellan said in a news release about Styka’s music.
Styka started writing and performing as a teenager, honing her craft among Chicago’s folk community. Now 28, she has performed for more than a decade, released four full-length albums and has toured from coast to coast. She was a 2015 New Folk Finalist at the Kerrville, Texas, Folk Festival, and has performed at the Folk Alliance International and Folk Alliance Region Midwest conferences as an official showcase artist. Her 2011 release, “Lifeboats for Atlantis,” hit No. 3 on the FolkDJ charts. After moving to Maine for two years, Styka released “While This Planet Spins Beneath Our Feet” in 2014, which charted for four months on Folk-DJ. Styka’s latest release, “The Bittersweet Tapes,” was recorded in Tulsa on a four-track recorder with production by John Calvin Abney.
With training as a poet and an actor, Styka is equal parts wordsmith and entertainer. Colored by a quirky sense of humor and peppered with confessional storytelling, Styka’s live shows are as intimate and candid as late night conversation, according to the news release. Styka is currently writing a new album and collaborating on upcoming projects.
