Norman North star Young sets college commitment date
College basketball fans hoping Norman North star point guard Trae Young will be coming to their school will have to wait less than two weeks to find out.
Young, a McDonald’s AllAmerican rated as a top-20 national player by most recruiting services, will announce his commitment at noon Feb. 16.
Before the season, Young said he was considering Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas and Kentucky.
He recently trimmed his list to three, but he has not publicly announced which three schools made the cut.
Young was averaging better than 40 points per game in his senior season heading into Friday night’s game at crosstown rival Norman North.
Deer Creek football coach Jay Wilkinson resigns
Deer Creek is again searching for a new football coach. Coach Jay Wilkinson informed his players Friday morning he is stepping down after just one season leading the program in its transition to Class 6A-II.
“I’m going to pursue other opportunities,” Wilkinson said. Freelance journalist Ben
Johnson first reported Wilkinson’s resignation.
The Antlers went 2-8 in Wilkinson’s one season while dealing with a plethora of injuries.
He took over the program after coaching two seasons at Coweta, where he led the Tigers to the playoffs each season. Before then, he was Broken Arrow’s offensive coordinator, head coach at Metro Christian and Central Oklahoma’s offensive coordinator.
At Deer Creek, Wilkinson replaced longtime coach Grant Gower, who led the Antlers for eight seasons as they grew from Class 3A to the school’s current size.
“There’s good people there, and it’s a good place for kids to go to school,” Wilkinson said. “I appreciate the opportunity to have a crack at leading them into 6A and wish them nothing but the best.”
Wilkinson would not comment on his possible opportunities elsewhere.
