Oklahoman honored among nation’s best
The Oklahoman has been announced as one of a select group of media outlets nationwide to earn the distinction of “grand slam” winner in the Associated Press Sports Editors contest in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. It’s the fourth time The Oklahoman has earned the distinction in the past five years.
To qualify for a “grand slam,” a media group must be named a Top 10 daily section, Top 10 Sunday section, Top 10
special section and a Top 10 website in its circulation division by APSE.
The Oklahoman placed Top 10 in each category in Division B (circulation of 75,001-175,000).
The Oklahoman sports department was judged on select print and digital work published in 2016.
“We are very proud of our sports staff,” said Kelly Dyer Fry, editor of
The Oklahoman. “It is always nice when others around the country appreciate and acknowledge those talents as well.”
In addition to the “grand slam,” The Oklahoman had writers place in the Top 10 in its circulation in the following categories:
• Explanatory writing (75,001-175,000) — Jenni Carlson
• Breaking news (75,001-175,000) — Berry Tramel and Nolan Clay
“This is a great honor for a sports staff that has undergone a tremendous amount of change in the past 12 months,” said sports editor Ryan Sharp. “We have an incredible group of writers and editors who remain committed to our readers and to each other. I am grateful for their work and for the amount of support we get from within the newsroom and from the leadership of The Oklahoman Media Company.”
