Assault and robbery charges dismissed against Revis

-

A judge has dismissed robbery, assault and all other charges against former New York Jets cornerback

stemming from a fight last month in Pittsburgh, after a childhood friend testified that he knocked out two men who confronted Revis during a dispute over a cellphone.

The friend, 31, of Aliquippa, has not been charged in connection with the incident about 2:30 a.m. Feb. 12 on the city’s South Side, a neighborhood well-known for its bars, restaurants and night life.

Bolton testified he knocked out 22, and 21, with one punch each after Revis phoned him to say he was being jumped. Bolton ran from a few blocks away and testified he saw one man with his arms about Revis’ waist and the other hanging on Revis’ neck, pulled both off, then punched them in self-defense.

A criminal complaint quoted Cousins and Jarvis as telling police they had been assaulted by Revis, though the men later acknowledged — and testified at Wednesday’s preliminary hearing — that they didn’t know who hit them.

Revis, the Jets first-round draft pick in 2007, said he’s hoping to sign a free-agent deal, and was relieved by the

judge’s decision.

Patriots re-sign coveted Hightower

The Patriots have resigned Pro Bowl linebacker

The new contract is for four years and $43.5 million. It brings back one of the Patriots’ biggest free agents, who has helped New England win two Super Bowls in his five NFL seasons. He has 372 tackles and 17 sacks since being a first-round pick out of Alabama in 2012.

He also had one of the biggest plays in last month’s Super Bowl. He forced a fumble on a sack on Atlanta’s in the fourth quarter, helping swing the momentum New England’s way in its comeback 34-28 overtime victory.

Hightower, 27, took free agent visits with both the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers, but will return to captain a defense that allowed a league-low 15.6 points per game during the regular-season in 2016.

Vikings re-sign Newman

The Minnesota Vikings and veteran cornerback

have agreed to terms on a new contract, bringing him back for a 15th season in the NFL.

The Vikings announced the deal Wednesday with Newman, who has been a starter for the team the last two years. He missed only one game in that span, because of a neck injury, and had four interceptions and 21 pass breakups.

Newman, who will turn 39 on Sept. 4, will start his ninth season playing under Vikings coach Zimmer was his defensive coordinator for four years with Dallas and two more with Cincinnati before they reunited again in Minnesota in 2015.

Ravens trade Zuttah to 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have agreed to acquire center from the Baltimore Ravens for an exchange of draft picks.

The Ravens will move up 12 spots in the sixth round in the deal announced Wednesday. Baltimore will now select with the 186th pick, while San Francisco will have the 198th selection. Zuttah must pass a physical to make the deal official.

The Ravens reportedly were going to release Zuttah to save $5.8 million in salary cap space before making the trade.

Zuttah has started 117 games in nine seasons, including all 16 games last season when he was picked for the Pro Bowl.

Jets’ Seferian Jenkins suspended two games

The NFL suspended New York Jets tight end

on Wednesday without pay for the first two games of the season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Seferian-Jenkins was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Florida last September while he was a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The tight end was cut by the Buccaneers a few days later and claimed off waivers by the Jets.

He is the second Jets player to be suspended in the past eight days. Wide receiver

was suspended last Tuesday for the first four games for violating the league’s policy on performance enhancers.
