Boys & Girls Club honors members in Oklahoma

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

Kismet Okyere was chosen as youth of the year and Lindsey Sciberras was named military youth of the year during a Boys & Girls Club state competition.

Okyere has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club of Bartlesville for 11 years, according to a news release. She is a junior at Bartlesville High School and member of the National Honor Society. Through her work at the Boys & Girls Club and Camp New Day, a summer camp for children with one or more incarcerated parents, she has completed more than 175 community service hours. She plans a career in social work/child psychology by obtaining a psychology degree from Louisiana State University.

Sciberras is the daughter of Master Sgt. Kenneth and Jo Ann Sciberras. She is a sophomore at Midwest City High School, where she is involved in music and drama. She has been a member of the Tinker Youth Center for 11 years and is the Keystone Club president. She believes that growing up as a military child is rough, but makes for a stronger family bond and secure relationships with others. Her vision for America’s youth is to develop an app that prevents youth from using their phones while driving over the speed of 10 mph. Sciberras hopes to attend the University of Florida and obtain a degree in criminal law. Her aspiration is to be a defense attorney and to fight for justice for the falsely accused.

Established in 1947, youth of the year is the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s premier recognition program, promoting service to club, community and family, academic success, moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking ability.

This year, eight students from across Oklahoma competed after being selected by their local clubs. The winners were announced this month.

Also competing in the program were Mackenzie L. Bechtold, from The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club of Metro Tulsa; Mackenzie Boykin, The Salvation Army BGC of Greater Oklahoma; Dakota Morgan, Vance Air Force Base; Maya Sanchez, Altus Air Force Base; Kayelee Self, BGC Wilson; and Alexis Smith, BGC Oklahoma County.
