A man who may have been firing his weapon at passing vehicles was shot and killed Sunday by an Oklahoma City police officer.

Police were called to the area of S 15 and Robinson Ave. about4:30 p.m. Sunday, police Capt. Paco Balderrama said. Witnesses said they saw a man pointing a handgun at passing vehicles.

“They said they heard load pops, as if he was discharging his weapon,” Balderrama said.

When officers arrived, they found a black male sitting on the steps of a business at 1522 S Robinson Ave.

“They saw him sitting, holding a gun, and the officers pulled in and made contact with him and told him to drop the gun several times,”Balderrama said.

The man advanced on the officers and made a threatening gesture, Balderrama said, causing one of the officers to discharge his weapon. That officer shot the suspect, who was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead.

Balderrama said police have identified the man but will not be releasing his name until next-ofkin has been notified.

One of the officers was wearing a body camera, and it was activated during the incident, Balderrama said. That footage should be made available soon, he said.

The officer who discharged his weapon will be placed on routine administrative leave. Balderrama said they are not releasing the officer’s name at this time.
