Homeless Alliance announces water drive

Miss Teen Oklahoma drops by to volunteer at WestTown lunch service for the homeless

- Food Editor dcathey@oklahoman.com BY DAVE CATHEY

Idropped by the Homeless Alliance last week to check in and found a couple of things worth sharing.

First, the recent spate of triple-digit temperatures triggered an emergency water drive. Dan Straughn, director at the Homeless Alliance, said those living without shelter are in increased danger when weather becomes this severe, and the need for water increases.

Anyone interested in donating cases of bottled water should contact the Homeless Alliance at 415-8410 to make arrangements.

Among the volunteers at the WestTown day shelter that day were

Miss Teen Oklahoma International Clovie Knowles and folks from Keller Williams Realty.

This was Knowles second time volunteering on the lunch line at WestTown. She made time for the visit on her birthday. The recent Heritage Hall grad’s platform is raising awareness for Friedreich’s Ataxia, an illness her friend and classmate Michael Gehr battles.

You can track her pursuit of Miss Teen International at missteenoklahomainternational.com.

Meanwhile, if you’re able to help fill the volunteer calendar like Keller Williams and a growing number of other groups have, go online to homelessalliance.org to sort through the options.

Savings and Loan Bar shutters

The first business to open in the Tower Theatre building renaissance has closed. Savings and Loan Bar ended a turbulent year of business on July 15, issuing a long statement on its website the night before.

The bar first closed in March shortly before Tower ownership parted ways with its operating partners. It reopened April 14 but, according to the post by general manager Alex Larrea, being in the “Tower Theatre” building is a massive undertaking and our bar just never got the timing right.” No word yet on a replacement.

Look at LOOK@OKC

Be sure to pick up a copy of “LOOK@OKC” this week in which editor Nathan Poppe and I compare and contrast tacos from across the metro. We visited one of the city’s oldest taco joints to some of its newest. The free publication is available at locations across Oklahoma City. You can use our locator online at NewsOK.com to find a copy.

More St. Mark’s details

Chef Jonathon Stranger says reservations are now being taken for his newest concept, St. Mark’s Chop Room. As I mentioned last week, the restaurant opens during the second week of August, but I have a few new details on small upscale eatery. Located next door to En Croute in Nichols Hills Plaza, St. Mark’s will have with six tables and eight bar seats. Wagyu beef will be at the center of the menu, and you can book your seats now on tocktix.com.
