Norman event to feature top Brass
NORMAN — Norman's own Boyd Street Brass will perform at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 6 at Lions Park, Flood Street and Symmes Avenue, as part of the Summer Breeze concert series.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring seating and refreshments to enjoy the free outdoor concert.
Boyd Street Brass, founded in 2013, was modeled after traditional New Orleans street bands. The band has since developed a unique and diverse sound blending funk, swing, Latin and pop music. The band performs a mix of instrumental and vocal tunes, including original songs, as well as covers of other brass bands and popular songs.
The band released its debut album, "Sap Suka," in April 2015. The album fuses the raw energy of a New Orleans-style brass band with the sophistication of a contemporary big band.
The wide range of professional experience of its members is one of the compelling aspects of Boyd Street Brass. Brian Dobbins, sousaphone, is the principal tuba player for the Fountain City Brass Band and the Norman Philharmonic. Jonathan Nichol, tenor saxophone, is a member of the H2 Quartet and was a member of the Jimmy Dorsey Band and the Grand Rapids Jazz Orchestra. Jay Wilkinson, trumpet/vocals/principal arranger, is a member of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the Oklahoma City Jazz Orchestra. Eric Walschap, bari/alto sax, and Daryl Nagode, trombone, come from the local bands Pidgin and Banana Seat. Brian Dailey, drums, recently returned from playing on board the Carnival Splendor.
