Defending champion: Berryhill

The Chiefs are the 3A-5 favorites again after wrecking through their 2016 schedule. Berryhill scored 48.5 points and allowed 11 points on average in district play last season. The Chiefs finished 12-1 with their only loss coming to eventual state champion Jones in the Class 3A state quarterfinals.

Returning stars

Joshua Sharp, RB/WR/S, Berryhill: The versatile senior has garnered college interest after an impressive showing as a junior. He was a key piece to an aggressive and athletic Berryhill defense and proved pivotal as a starting receiver and reserve running back. Sharp is one of the many reasons why Berryhill should contend for a Class 3A title.

Miguel Fulgencio, RB/S, Sequoyah Claremore: The senior was the cornerstone of Seq. Claremore’s powerful running game last season. His power and athleticism made him difficult to stop with his 6-foot-1 frame. He brought a lot of the same power and athleticism on defense as a towering safety. Fulgencio holds offers from the likes of Wyoming, Eastern Michigan and FCS Missouri State.

Beau Teel, QB, Sperry: The junior was named Sperry’s starting quarterback as a freshman. He’s emerged from the early playing time and two years of starting experience as one of the top quarterbacks in Class 3A. Teel showed plenty of grit and promise as a sophomore, and he figures to improve even more as one of the team’s veterans.

Big question: Can Berryhill finish the job?

After starting its season 11-0, Berryhill ran into a solid Jones team in the state quarterfinals last season. The Chiefs will break in a new starting quarterback, but the talent is there again for coach Pat Harper’s squad to make another run at a gold ball.
