Westmoore romps past Moore in penalty-plagued game

- BY MURRAY EVANS

MOORE – Westmoore struggled to get out of its own way on Friday night, rolling up more major penalties (eight) than touchdowns (seven) and having three turnovers wiped out by penalty flags while committing three of their own.

But even so, the Jaguars found a way to make it look easy against arch-rival Moore.

For the 18th straight time, the Moore War went to Westmoore. Quarterback Braxton Bohrofen threw for 217 yards and four touchdowns. Tailback Braxton George rushed for 125 yards and three scores as the Jaguars blasted the Lions, 50-18, at Moore Schools Stadium.

A slew of penalties on both sides meant the traditional rivalry game had little rhythm. Class 6AI No. 5-ranked Westmoore (1-0) had a whopping 17 penalties for 187 yards, while 10th-ranked Moore had eight for 95 – and that’s not counting the handful of penalties that were declined. As a result, the game lasted more than three hours despite the lopsided score.

But in between all the yellow on the field, Bohrofen and George had shining moments. Bohrofen threw scoring passes of 48 and 42 yards to Jacob Clark (who was named the game’s most valuable player), 33 yards to Damoreia Vick and 29 yards to James Palmer.

George, meanwhile, reeled off touchdown runs of 25, 10 and 28 yards before exiting the game with Bohrofen after three quarters with the game well in hand.

Westmoore’s defense limited Moore (0-1) to just 250 yards, much of it after the result already had been decided. Third-string quarterback Cameron Allen had the best performance for the Lions, passing for 94 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 38 yards on six carries.

Early Westmoore miscues meant Moore started its first possession on the Westmoore 29, and the Lions took advantage, with quarterback Joe Balak scoring on a 4-yard scramble – but only after a penalty two plays earlier wiped out an apparent interception.

After throwing an interception in the end zone on Westmoore’s second possession, Bohrofen finally got the Jaguars’ offense rolling, and George scored on a 25-yard run on a 4th-and-1 play.

The Jaguars struck for two touchdowns in a 31-second span early in the second quarter. First, Bohrofen hit Clark in the flat and Clark broke three tackles en route to a 48-yard touchdown. After Westmoore’s Chris Oliver recovered a Moore fumble, Bohrofen connected with Vick on a 33-yard scoring pass.

A 5-yard run by George made it 28-7 with 1:07 left in the first half, but two major penalties against Westmoore set up a 33-yard field goal by Dylan Ellis on the half’s final play. That came – of course – after a penalty wiped out an apparent interception.

It was more of the same in the third quarter, as the Jaguars piled on with three touchdowns and a blocked punt that resulted in a safety, giving them a 50-10 lead.
