Bohrofen leads Westmoore over rival Southmoore

- BY MURRAY EVANS

Braxton Bohrofen’s passing and Zac Johnson’s kick returns proved to be the weapons of choice for Westmoore on Friday night in the Jaguars’ second demolition of a local rival in as many weeks.

Bohrofen overcame a brief scare due to a hand injury to pass for 250 yards and three touchdowns, and Johnson returned kickoffs 91 and 61 yards for scores as Class 6A-I No. 4 Westmoore rolled past Southmoore 53-6 in the SouthWest Showdown at Moore Schools Stadium, clinching the unofficial Moore city championship.

Westmoore (2-0), which wore allblack uniforms in a 50-18 romp over Moore in the season opener, went with the all-white look (with gray numbers) against Southmoore (0-2) and was the sleekest squad throughout. The Jaguars outgained Southmoore 407 yards to 218 and had two safeties in addition to the two special-teams touchdowns.

“I feel good about this offense, but I want to keep feeling good about it,” Westmoore coach Lorenzo Williams said. “I really just want to see us play hard next week (against Edmond North), because that’s the week everybody said we can’t play (well), that it would be a letdown week, that the kids were too emotional these first two games. I really want to see them play hard next week.”

Bohrofen banged his hand on a helmet after throwing his third touchdown pass, a 14-yarder to Jacob Clark, midway through the second quarter, and his younger brother, Jace Bohrofen, finished out the half behind center for Westmoore. But Braxton came back and played all of the third and part of the fourth quarter, finishing 13-of-21 passing. Williams said there were no concerns about his starter’s hand.

Braxton Bohrofen’s first two touchdown passes went to James Palmer, for 26 and 15 yards, respectively. Palmer finished with six catches for 96 yards, all in the first half.

Southmoore’s only effective offensive weapon was quarterback Jaedyn Scott’s running. The sophomore rushed for 156 yards on 21 carries, including a 61-yard jaunt to the Westmoore 5 that set up the SaberCats’ only touchdown, a 1-yard run by Donovan Gaines.

Johnson answered by returning the ensuing kickoff 91 yards, and after a Southmoore punt, Bohrofen’s touchdown pass to Clark made it 28-6.

Westmoore’s Nikale Davis recorded the first safety, tackling Southmoore tailback Rae’quan Wicks in the end zone. Johnson returned Southmoore’s free kick following the safety 61 yards and the Jaguars led 37-6.

“Zac Johnson is a playmaker,” Williams said. “He’s one of our biggest playmakers on defense at free safety. He’s not very big but ... he’s real tough and he’s going to give you everything he’s got every time. We know the opportunity is going to be there when you kick to that guy. He makes plays.”

After touchdown runs by Braxton George (19 carries, 114 yards) and Garrett King, Scott had to fall on a bad snap in his own end zone, with Blair Brewer receiving credit for the tackle for Westmoore.
