Lamb throws for 7 TDs

Quarterback Griffin Lamb is the big man in Cashion these days. The transfer from Crossings Christian threw for seven touchdowns last week to lead the Wildcats to a 54-6 rout of Yale.

Looking around at his starters on Friday, El Reno football coach Chuck Atchison counted the number of seniors he had on the field. It was a short exercise. As El Reno beat Western Heights 27-20 to move to 4-4 on the season, it did so without several key contributors out with injury.

Senior running back Hunter Cometsevah, who surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark two weeks before, continues to heal up an ankle injury, while senior receiver Dyson Plumley was forced to sit after sustaining a concussion.

“We had one senior that started, and the rest were basically freshman and sophomores,” Atchison said. “We are young, young, young. But that’s really no excuse. We have football left to play.”

Playoff-deciding games in fact.

Standing at 2-3 in Class 5A-1, El Reno’s final two games against Del City (3-2) and Duncan (2-3) will decide who lands a playoff spot.

“We still have a long way to go, but we are happy with the progress we’ve made this season,” Atchison said. “We have lots of guys who have stepped up, and we don’t think we’ve really hit our full potential yet.”

One player who has stepped up for El Reno while others have been injured is junior receiver Dekota Wilson, who filled in at running back while Cometsevah was out.

“We plugged him in, and he really had a nice game for us,” Atchison said. “That’s part of what I love about my team. No excuses. We just try and have that next man up mentality.”

Cashion quarterback throws seven TD passes

Cashion quarterback Griffin Lamb completed 10 passes in a win against Yale on Friday.

Seven of those were for touchdowns.

“I’d say he was pretty efficient,” Cashion coach Lynn Shackelford said. “We knew we wanted to come out passing, but those numbers really jump off the page.”

Cashion (6-2) dominated Yale 54-6, and it was the sophomore quarterback Lamb who led the way, throwing for 374 yards and the seven scores.

This is Lamb’s first year at Cashion after transferring from Crossings Christian last year. Shackelford says Lamb has gotten better and better each week.

“It took him a little while to adjust because it would take any kid some time to adjust,” Shackelford said. “But he’s just so much more comfortable now with his teammates, with the offense, with everything.

“I’m just really happy he’s here.”
