TULSA FOOTBALL

All in the family

Former Tulsa quarterback G.J. Kinne (2009-11) will face his alma mater Friday as an offensive graduate assistant at SMU. Kinne’s cousin, Craig Suits, is a starting Hurricane linebacker.

“It’s going to be weird,” Suits said. “I’ve not had an encounter going against him or really with him. I’ve always watched him play or look up to him. Now I’m playing against a team that he’s a part of. We’re looking forward to hopefully beating him so I can rub it in his face.”

In 2010, Kinne’s quarterback coach at TU was SMU coach Chad Morris.

The Mustangs’ defensive coordinator, Van Malone, coached the Hurricane secondary in 2010 and 2011.

SMU has two other former TU staffers on its sideline: secondary coach Jess Loepp, whose three stints included an assistant role in 2010-14, and linebackers coach Archie McDaniel, who was a defensive assistant in 2010-11.

Brewer update

Leading rusher D’Angelo Brewer did not play in the Hurricane’s 20-14 loss at UConn on Saturday despite making the trip and suiting up. He was banged up from an injury that occurred in practice last week.

“Hopefully we’re going to have him back this week,” coach Philip Montgomery said. “We’ll see. I think he’s feeling better. You never know until you get into game time how those things are going to react.”

In Brewer’s absence, freshman Shamari Brooks made his first start, rushing for 164 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries.

“Shamari really grabbed the bull by the horns and got the job done,” Montgomery said. “He made some big runs in there, did a nice job in pass (protection), made some nice blocks out on the perimeter in different run schemes. I thought he did exceptionally well with the much-added load on his shoulders.”

More on Brooks

In his first year out of Union High School, Brooks is 97 yards of shy of the TU freshman rushing record of 765 yards, set in 1995 by Reggie Williams. Brooks also has tied Williams with four 100-yard rushing performances, the most by a Hurricane freshman.

“A lot of my success is because of the O-line,” Brooks said. “We have a lot of all-conference guys up front. They do a great job of opening the holes and making it a lot easier for guys like me and D’Angelo.”
