Christopher Bell seeking Truck Series title in Miami

- SCOTT WRIGHT, STAFF WRITER

For the second year in a row, Norman native Christopher Bell is one race away from a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship.

While last year’s run to the championship round was a little unexpected, the 22-year-old Bell has been among the favorites for the title all year, his second full-time season in the series.

Bell and three other drivers — Johnny Sauter, Matt Crafton and Austin Cindric — will be in the field for Friday night’s finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, with the highest finisher taking the title.

Bell leads the truck series in nearly every major statistical category, including wins (five), poles (five), top-five finishes (14), top-10 finishes (20), driver rating (118.5), average starting position (4.6), average finish (5.9), average running position (5.9), laps led (865) and fastest laps run (419).

Three of Bell’s wins this season have come on 1.5mile tracks like Homestead.

“To be able to make it to the Championship 4 two years in a row and have another shot to bring home a championship to Kyle Busch Motorsports is something I'm really proud of,” Bell said.

“It will be kind of a bittersweet weekend for me — it’s the end of a long run at KBM, but it’s been a great one and I’m thankful for all the people that I’ve met and the relationships I've built.

“Winning a championship on Friday night for everyone at KBM, Toyota, Toyota Racing Development and JBL — all the people that were there when I started my run in the Truck Series in 2015 and have helped me be in the position I am — would be a great way to end this chapter of my career.”

Bell will run full-time in the Xfinity Series for Joe Gibbs Racing next season.
