Martin making most of his chance

Jones’ high-flying offense has shown a little more versatility the past few weeks with the ground attack.

It’s partially by design, but also out of necessity. Sophomore running back

Blaine Martin has emerged as a talented option the past few weeks following the season-ending injury to senior Trevor Mansell.

“He’s one of those guys that are tough to tackle in a phone booth,” Jones coach

Dave Martin said. “He’s got a lot of agility to him, and that was the difference between him and Trevor. Trevor was more of a power guy.”

Mansell tore his anterior cruciate ligament Oct. 13 against Prague. In three games since, Martin has scored 11 touchdowns.

That’s added another dimension for the Longhorns’ offense entering Friday’s Class 3A title game rematch against Plainview.

“It’s been great that he’s been able to pick up that void there,” Martin said.

Cashion gets rematch with Afton

Cashion coach Lynn Shackelford isn't sure what his starters remember about last year's playoff loss to Afton.

Most of them weren't on the field for it.

"We had a lot of turnover and are really not even the same team at all," Shackelford said. "But I've told those guys, you are no longer freshmen and sophomores. Our kids have grown up a lot over the year."

Even after replacing 15 starters from last year's team, Cashion continues to find ways to win this season. In an opening round 28-6 victory against Woodland, Shackelford credited his team's defense for responding on a lackluster offensive day.

"We didn't run the ball well and we will have to do that as we go forward," Shackelford said. "We are going to have to play our best game against Afton to go there and get a win."

Last year, Afton took advantage of a pick-six to swing momentum against Cashion, eventually winning the game 32-30. Cashion will travel back to Afton on Friday to face a dangerous Eagles offense.

Led by senior quarterback Will Amos, Afton went undefeated in the regular season and Amos racked up more than 1,700 yards rushing as well as nearly 1,000 yards passing.

"He's easily the best player we have faced this year," Shackelford said. "We just need to play mistake-free football. Our guys are hungry and excited about the opportunity."

Vick commits to Missouri State

Westmoore senior receiver Damoriea Vick has found a collegiate home.

Vick announced Wednesday that he had committed to Missouri State just days after the Jaguars’ season ended in the Class 6A-I state quarterfinals.

He announced it on his Twitter page.

Vick has been a go-to receiver in Westmoore’s offense the past two years. He caught five touchdowns each year and totaled more than 1,100 yards receiving.

Harrah’s Ankney signs with ORU

Harrah star basketball player Erika Ankney never doubted her commitment to Oral Roberts.

That made signing her National Letter of Intent last week a special moment

“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Ankney said.

Ankney, a 5-foot-8 guard, averaged 10.6 points while helping Harrah win the Class 4A state championship last season. She was on The Oklahoman’s Little All-City second team.

She said she chose ORU based on the people around the program.

“The coaching staff and players are the type of people I want to be surrounded with for four years of my basketball career,” Ankney said.
