Many, as in all of them, schools from this part of the country missed on recruiting Baker Mayfield. Here are the quarterback recruits from 2013 by Big 12 schools and others who regularly recruit the state of Texas:

OSU: Jake Hubanek, walk-on from Georgetown, Texas, who transferred to Blinn Junior College after one season and is finishing his career at Texas A&M, where he’s played sporadically in three seasons with the Aggies.

OU: Cody Thomas, from Colleyville (Texas) Heritage. Started three games for OU in 2014 after Trevor Knight was injured. Left OU after being picked in the 2016 baseball draft and played Class A ball for Great Lakes of the Midwest League in 2017, where he hit 20 home runs and batted .222.

Texas A&M: Kenny Hill from Southlake (Texas) Carroll and Kohl Stewart from Houston St. Pius X. Stewart signed a baseball contract instead of attending A&M. Hill played a little as a 2013 freshman, then became A&M’s starting quarterback in 2014. But he lost his job late in the year and transferred to TCU. In two seasons as the Frogs’ starting quarterback, Hill has thrown 33 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Baylor: Chris Johnson, from Bryan, Texas. Played a little in 2014, then moved to receiver and had three catches before switching

back to quarterback late in the year after a rash of injuries. He replaced the injured Jarrett Stidham at halftime in Stillwater and led Baylor to a 45-35 victory over OSU. Then Johnson transferred to Houston in the wake of the Art Briles scandal and played tight end for the Cougars in 2016.

Texas: Tyrone Swoopes, from Whitewright, Texas. Was Texas’ primary starter in 2014 but ineffective. Spent the next two seasons as a situational player.

Texas Tech: Davis Webb, from Prosper, Texas. Arrived in Lubbock with Baker Mayfield in 2013, and they staged a duel for the job after likely starter Michael Brewer suffered a summer back injury. Mayfield won the job, then Webb took over mid-season after Mayfield was injured. In 2014, with Mayfield off to OU, Webb was the starter but was injured midway through the season, and true freshman Patrick Mahomes took over. In 2015, Webb backed up Mahomes. Then Webb transferred as a graduate to California and starred for the Golden Bears in 2016. Now Webb is on the New York Giants roster.

TCU: Zach Allen, from Temple, Texas. Threw two passes before moving to tight end in 2015. Then Allen transferred to Rutgers, where he threw 12 passes last season and suffered a major knee injury before this season.

Kansas State: Jake Waters from Iowa Western Community College and Jesse

Ertz from Mediapolis, Iowa. Both were quality recruits. Waters was the starting QB in both 2013 and 2014, leading K-State to a combined 17-9 record. Ertz took over in 2016 and led the ‘Cats to a 9-4 record, though he’s been injured most of this season.

Kansas: Montell Cozart from Kansas City (Kansas) Bishop Meige and Jordan Darling of Shawnee Mission (Kansas) East. Cozart was KU’s quarterback off and on for four years, 2013-16, then transferred to Boise State as a graduate and is the Broncos’ backup QB. Darling was moved to tight end and never played.

Iowa State: Joel Lanning of Ankeny, Iowa, and Trevor Hodge of Perris, California. Lanning, you know all about. Solid quarterback for the Cyclones in recent years, moved to middle linebacker this season and has helped as a short-yardage QB. Hodge was moved to defensive back.

LSU: Anthony Jennings, Marietta, Georgia, and Hayden Rettig. Jennings started most of 2014 for LSU but lost his job in 2015 and transferred to Louisiana-Lafayette. Rettig soon transferred to Rutgers and eventually transferred to Tennessee Tech.

Arkansas: Austin Allen of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Damon Mitchell of Egg Harbor City, New Jersey. Allen was the Razorbacks’ starting quarterback last season and some of this season. Mitchell soon moved to safety and on to tailback before transferring.
