OU fraternity ex-treasurer faces charge

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

The former treasurer of a University of Oklahoma fraternity has been charged with embezzlement after being accused of withdrawing thousands of dollars from the organization.

Jacob Morgan Stephens, 21, is accused of embezzling about $32,000 from the OU chapter of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity, court records show.

Police were contacted by the fraternity’s president in March, who reported that Stephens withdrew the money between May 2016 through February 2017. Bank records showing the unauthorized transactions were given to investigators, according to a court affidavit.

Police were able to determine that Stephens had deposited more than 40 checks, totaling $16,124.42, made payable to “Jake Stephens” or “Mike Doss.” All checks, except for one, were deposited to

Stephens’ bank account.

Stephens is also accused of withdrawing thousands of dollars after visiting the fraternity’s bank in person.

“At no point during my investigation did I find any evidence to support a legal reason for the number of transactions or the monetary amount of withdraws from the victim’s bank account,” a Norman detective wrote in a court affidavit.

Stephens was charged in Cleveland County District Court on Dec. 21 on one count of embezzlement and an arrest warrant was issued on Dec. 29.
