John Marshall holds up after Douglass comeback

As the final buzzer sounded in overtime,

Patrick Garrett held the ball over his head with one hand and beat his chest with the other.

Garrett had collected the final rebound in what had been a spirited extra five minutes against rival Douglass in which John Marshall fell behind by five points but ended up winning on a 7-0 run to win 59-57.

The John Marshall (104) celebration caused a little chaos as it neared too closely to the Douglass bleachers, causing a momentary exchange between the two fan groups and players that was quickly dissuaded.

“That’s just what this rivalry is all about,” John Marshall coach Patrick

Cudjoe said. “Lot of high stakes, bragging rights, northside vs. eastside and what have you. But I’m just proud of my guys for persevering.”

The game went to overtime on a huge fourth quarter effort from Douglass senior Andre Williams.

Williams went to the free throw line with less than 30 seconds to play with the chance to cut John Marshall’s lead to 3 but missed the second free thrown. Williams then grabbed his own miss and laid the ball in to cut the lead to 2.

After a John Marshall turnover, Williams got the ball again and after missing on a drive to the basket, grabbed his missed shot again and laid it in as the buzzer sounded to go to OT.

But it was John Marshall’s Garrett, who made clutch free throws and assisted on a Stevie Davis Jr. 3-pointer that ended up winning the game for the Bears.

Garrett finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots.

“He really helped us keep our cool there late,” Cudjoe said. “This is a great win for us and a great look at how we can play when we really want it.”
