Flexing her muscles
McGuinness junior Hanna Newby broke two of her own state records while qualifying for a third trip to the state meet during Saturday’s Class 5A regional swim meet.
McGuinness junior Hanna Newby is learning more and more about herself.
That’s bad news for the rest of the state.
Newby, one of the state’s most prolific swimmer, flexed her muscles during Saturday’s Class 5A regional swim meet by breaking two of her own state records while qualifying for a third trip to the state meet.
She set a mark in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:01.97, well ahead of her old record of 1:04.58. She also broke her mark of 2:07.77 in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.35.
“No matter what record I may break, I want to keep going and break it again,” Newby said. “I want to make myself better and make my team better. I’m, not going to stop working to get better just because I get one record.”
Newby said she’s improved this season thanks to a new pre-meet workout. She swims extra before the meet to get warm. She drinks more Gatorade. She focuses more.
“I really just put that into play and it’s really coming together with what I drink, what I eat and what I do to warmup,” Newby said.
Edmond teams tie; Norman North boys dominate
Edmond North and Edmond Memorial’s girls teams used two different paths to get to a Class 6A west regional championship tie.
Memorial won seven of the eight individual events. North took a relay title and then had three to four of the top eight spots in five individual events.
For Norman North, the boys looked the like state champion favorites with 521 total points. The Timberwolves won three relay events and both Jonathon Tang and Aiden Hayes won their two events.
Stillwater teams roll
Class 5A’s favorite to win both boys and girls titles showed exactly why.
Stillwater’s girls team totaled 462 points, well ahead of second-place Altus’ 289 to dominate the meet.
The Pioneers’ boys team had 406 points, also well ahead of Class 5A defending champion Deer Creek’s 317.
For the girls, Stillwater freshman Marcia Shaw continued her breakout season with wins in the 50-yard freestyle (25.04) and 100-yard freestyle (54.17). Seniors Savanna Barth and Dewi Blose also won their two events.
For the boys, Stillwater’s Ryan Clark won both of his events. The Pioneers’ relay dominance helped lead the way.
Deer Creek’s Sam Johnston won the 200-yard individual medley, edging Stillwater’s Aaron Hill with a time of 2:09.68.
Tuttle freshman has strong meet
Stillwater’s girls may have dominated, but it was still a strong regional meet debut for Tuttle freshman Hallie Sheffield.
She finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (2:03.89) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:41.98), both times behind Barth, a senior signed with William Jewel.
