Taylor comes up with play that helped Eagles beat Patriots
The Eagles beat the Patriots 41-33 in an epic Super Bowl 52, and Philadelphia took out New England in part because of a play that will live forever in NFL lore. On fourth-and-goal from the New England 1-yard line, in the final minute of the first half, Eagle coach Doug Pederson disdained a field goal and ordered up a trick play.
With quarterback Nick Foles sliding down the line of scrimmage seemingly barking signals, the Eagles snapped the ball to tailback Corey Clement, who ran left and handed off to tight end Trey Burton circling back to the right. Burton then threw a touchdown pass to a wide open Foles in the corner of the end zone.
And si.com reports that the play was the brainchild of Press Taylor.
Taylor is the Norman High School alum, a former Tiger quarterback, who went on to quarterback at Marshall University and now has been working several years in the NFL. Taylor is an assistant quarterback coach for the Eagles — what we used to call a quality-control coach.
Eagle offensive coordinator Frank Reich told si.com that Taylor should be credited with the play. “Press has this, what we call this vault of trick plays,” Reich said. “It's an immense vault, so every week we go into Press's vault looking for plays.”
Taylor apparently culled the play from the Chicago Bears, who used a virtually identical play against the Vikings in Week 17 of 2016.
“We’re fine with ideas coming from anywhere,” Reich said. “Doug loves ideas.”
This idea turned the Super Bowl in the Eagles’ favor. Sounds like Taylor has a future in Philadelphia.
