OU concludes weekend with loss to Va. Tech

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Oklahoma concluded play at the Battle at the Beach with a 14-6 loss to Virginia Tech at TicketRetu­rn.com Field on Sunday.

The Sooners (1-3) struggled defensivel­y, committing six errors in the contest.

Former Westmoore standout Kyle Tyler took the loss for the Sooners in a three-inning start. He surrendere­d nine runs, only three of which were earned, on six hits and two walks.

Virginia Tech (1-2) scored six runs on three hits and four errors in the third and added five runs on four hits and an error in the fourth. OU scored a single run in the fifth, sixth and seventh, including a solo home run by freshman designated hitter Tyler Hardman.

Junior right fielder Cade Harris led the OU lineup, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two walks and one RBI. Junior center fielder Steele Walker added a 2-for-5 day.

Former Norman North standout Thomas Hughes, the son of former OU head coach Pete Hughes, came off the bench to play second base and drove in two runs on a single. Freshman right hander Jake Terry was the most effective of five OU relievers as he pitched two innings without surrenderi­ng a hit.

For the Hokies, second baseman Jack Owens was 3-for-6 with two runs. Dylan Hall pitched five innings and allowed just one run on six hits to earn the win.
