Boone finishes triple shy of cycle in Cowboys’ victory

-

TULSA — Saturday night at ONEOK Field, Oklahoma State outfielder Trevor Boone narrowly missed a grand slam, his towering fly ball caught at the left-field wall for a sacrifice fly. He had no desire to suffer such a fate Sunday.

In OSU’s 9-2 victory over Oklahoma to complete a Bedlam sweep, Boone went 3-for-3, scoring three times, driving in two and finishing a triple shy of the cycle. After his shot to left Saturday came up short, he instead managed to deliver a home run over right field’s short porch in Sunday’s sixth inning.

“I was just trying to stick with the approach and find a good pitch to hit, put a good swing on it and just see what Mother Nature wanted it to do,” Boone said.

Boone’s big day came without batting gloves, a change made because he “wanted to try something different.” Fellow outfielder Jon Littell, who homered to left an inning after Boone’s blast, had another explanation to offer, though.

“He’s a clown,” Littell said.

OU takes first Bedlam lead since 2016

Including Sunday’s finale, OSU has won every Bedlam game the past two seasons. Until Sunday’s second inning, the Cowboys had yet to trail in any of them.

Kyle Mendenhall’s sacrifice fly to score Brady Lindsly put the Sooners ahead, 1-0. It was OU’s first Bedlam lead since a 3-1 victory May 15, 2016, at ONEOK Field. OSU either led or was tied for the rivalry’s next 43 innings until Mendenhall’s sacrifice fly.

The Sooners’ lead did not last long. Two batters into OSU’s half of the second, Boone tied the game with an RBI double off the leftfield wall.

“It’s a weekend where the ball didn’t bounce our way,” OU coach Skip Johnson said.

Up next

Fresh off its first threegame sweep of OU since 2007, OSU will play its third straight game in Tulsa on Tuesday at Oral Roberts. The Cowboys then get the weekend off from Big 12 play, facing Iowa in a threegame series on the road.

OU has no midweek game ahead of hosting Kansas State for a threegame set.
