- FROM WIRE REPORTS

Kyle Larson turned a lap of 158.103 mph on Friday to take the pole at Dover International Speedway.

Kyle Larson has given Chevrolet a needed boost, turning a lap of 158.103 mph to win the pole at Dover International Speedway in Delaware.

Larson won his fifth career pole and will try Sunday to win his first race of the season. Larson also won Chevy’s first pole since Alex Bowman took the top spot at the Daytona 500.

Kevin Harvick joins Larson on the front row. Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. completed the top five in Friday’s qualifying.

Chase Elliott, another Chevy driver who had complained last week he didn’t have help from his fellow manufacturer drivers in the closing laps, starts sixth.

Jimmie Johnson starts 19th as he tries to extend his track-record win total of 11.

Malnati leads Wells Fargo as Woods survives the cut

Peter Malnati wanted to get away from results and think only about playing his best. He was at his best over the last three holes Friday at the Wells Fargo Championship and finished with a 3-under 68 for a oneshot lead.

Malnati made two straight birdies and finished with a par that felt like a birdie. He cleared the steep lip of a bunker with inches to spare and made a 6-foot putt.

Jason Day (67) and PGA Tour rookie Aaron Wise (68) were one shot behind.

Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy made it to the weekend, though not by much. Woods made his only birdie on his final hole for a 73 that assured he would make the cut at Quail Hollow for the first time since 2009.

Mets to cut ties with Harvey

Matt Harvey refused a minor league assignment and will be designated for assignment Saturday.

The 29-year-old righthander lost his spot in the rotation last month after four starts, and he had a 10.50 ERA in four relief appearances.

“It’s the end of an era,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said before Friday night’s game against Colorado.

New York had hoped Harvey would be willing to work at the team’s minor league complex in Florida in an effort to regain form. Harvey refused.

After Harvey is designated, the Mets have seven days to trade him or release him.

Raiders sign veteran LB Derrick Johnson

The Oakland Raiders agreed to a one-year deal Friday with veteran linebacker Derrick Johnson to bolster the middle of their defense.

The 35-year-old Johnson spent his first 13 NFL seasons with the rival Kansas City Chiefs and will likely fill the role at middle linebacker that NaVorro Bowman played the second half of last season.

Johnson is a four-time Pro Bowler and the career tackles leader for the Chiefs.

Seahawks release DE Avril

Defensive end Cliff Avril has been released by the Seattle Seahawks with a failed physical designation due to a neck injury that cost him most of the 2017 season.

Avril’s release Friday was expected and could mean the end of a 10-year career during which he was a standout player for the Seahawks and the Detroit Lions.

Dolphins claim QB Petty

The Miami Dolphins have claimed former Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty a day after he was waived by the New York Jets.

With Miami’s move Friday, Petty joins veterans Brock Osweiler and David Fales in the competition for the backup job behind Ryan Tannehill.
