Red Oak, Shattuck win state championships

-

CLASS A RED OAK 9, CANEY 5

Red Oak leadoff hitter Darcie McCullar hit a two-out bases clearing triple in the second inning to give her team a lead it would not surrender in a 9-5 victory vs. Caney during Friday’s Class A slowpitch softball championship at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

McCullar was not expecting to get the opportunity to hit in the second inning, for Caney forced two quick outs after Mollie McGee led off the inning with a base hit. But Shaylee Noah reached base on an error and Jaiden Dill walked to bring the senior shortstop to the plate.

“We were having a little trouble with the pitcher’s arch,” Red Oak coach Jo Ann Scarberry said. “Getting through the bottom of the lineup to get back to the top, that’s what we were looking for. We knew our leadoff seniors would come up with big hits.”

Shandee Noah then drove in McCullar with a double during the next at bat. Noah finished the five-run inning scoring on Grace Montgomery’s base hit.

The game was trending close to a run-rule before Caney’s Krista Harkey hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning, which cut Red Oak’s lead to four. Neither team scored in the remaining two innings.

CLASS 2A SHATTUCK 10, STUART 4

Makayla Petree’s two-run homer in the first inning sparked Shattuck as it defeated Stuart 10-4 to win consecutive state slow pitch softball championships Friday at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

Shattuck scored four runs in the first inning, all with two-out. Alexis Sconyers opened the scoring after she drove in Carli Bullard with a double. Holt drove in Sconyers with a double and scored herself the next at-bat during Petree’s home run.

“The home run got us going,” Shattuck coach

Troy Bullard said. “We never looked back.”

Sconyers finished 3-4 with three doubles. Four of the top five hitters in Shattuck’s lineup had multi-hit games.

Trailing big for most of the game, Stuart fought to the finish. Skylar Stopp and Sienna Hooser hit back-toback home runs in the seventh inning with their team down to their final out.
