The Oklahoman

Extension office offers master gardener classes

- FROM STAFF REPORTS

The Oklahoma County Master Gardeners are accepting applications for the 2018 Master Gardener training program beginning in September.

Classes are held on Tuesdays for 12 weeks in September through November for a total of 60 hours of classroom training. Application deadline is Friday.

Upon completion of the classes, participants are required to perform 60 hours of volunteer work as interns. Classes are held at the Oklahoma County Extension office, 2500 NE 63.

Intern volunteer hours are completed at the Extension call center, hands-on garden work at the Zoo, Myriad Botanical Gardens and Will Rogers Garden, and committee and group projects.

A mandatory orientation session must be attended for an application to be considered. Dates and times are 10 a.m. to noon May 22 or 1 to 3 p.m. May 24.

The course is open to area residents with a high school diploma, who are interested in learning the latest Oklahoma State University research-based home horticulture information and practices, and who have an interest in community service. Priority will be given to Oklahoma County residents.

Registration fee is $150 and is nonrefundable. Fee is not due until an application has been accepted. Master Gardeners who have paid the class fee may repeat the course without charge.
