Retail sales

Economists are look­ing for a re­port to­day on retail sales to give fur­ther ev­i­dence that eco­nomic ac­tiv­ity picked up in the spring fol­low­ing a slow­down in the first quar­ter of the year. The job mar­ket con­tin­ues to strengthen, which may have made shop­pers more com­fort­able to spend dur­ing May. The retail sales data give an early look at how trends are pro­gress­ing for con­sumer spend­ing, which is the main driver of the U.S. econ­omy.
