2 earn spots on youth archery team

Two Oklahoma students have earned spots on the National Archery in the Schools U.S. All-Star Team that will compete against the world’s best at the World All-Star Championsh­ips July 8-11 in Calgary, Alberta.

The team is made up of 16 of the nation’s best youth archers. Oklahoma’s all-stars are Matthew Monroe, junior, Locust Grove High School, coached by Ladney Keener, and Jerod Aycox, seventh-grader, Zaneis School, coached by Angela Aycox.

They were among 14,885 student archers who competed in the organizati­on’s national tournament­s, less than 5 percent of the 2.2 million youths who participat­ed in National Archery in the Schools programs this year.

Oklahoma’s program, offered through the state Department of Wildlife Conservati­on, began in 2004 with eight schools. It now involves more than 55,000 Oklahoma students in 650 schools. In the most recent state tournament­s, nearly 4,000 students competed.

Blood drives planned Friday, Saturday

The Oklahoma Blood Institute will conduct blood drives in the metro area Friday and Saturday. To make an appointmen­t, go to obi.org or call 877-340-8777.

The Yukon American Legion will host a drive from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, followed by an event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Donors at the Saturday drive will receive two tickets to an upcoming Dodgers game.
