Teen accused in drive-by shooting

-

An Oklahoma City teenager was arrested Tuesday, accused of participating in a drive-by shooting while wearing a court-ordered ankle monitor.

Joel Angel Rendon, 17, who police say is a known South Side Loco gang member who goes by the street name “Bomba,” is accused of driving a sport utility vehicle to a Sunday morning party at a southwest Oklahoma City home where several people in the vehicle fired on the crowd.

Just after 3 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to the reported drive-by shooting in the 1600 block of SW 32, where they found three people had been shot.

Investigators learned the three victims were at the party when a black SUV pulled up and people in the vehicle identified themselves as South Side Loco gang members by showing gang signs and yelling “south side,” according to a court affidavit.

Shortly after, people in the back seat of the vehicle began to fire handguns at the crowd gathered at the party.

A witness told police the vehicle was a black Dodge Nitro with chrome wheels, which investigators said matched a vehicle that Rendon drove.

In April, Rendon was charged in Oklahoma County District Court on counts of trafficking methamphetamine, possession of drug proceeds and possession of a weapon while committing a felony. He was ordered to wear a GPS ankle monitor after he was released on bail.

Investigators said GPS records showed the device was pinged at the location of the shooting at 2:58 a.m. Sunday. A resident at the home told investigators that Rendon did not attend the party, according to a court affidavit.

On Tuesday, officers made contact with another known South Side Loco gang member who had just left a hotel room where Rendon was staying. The man told officers he had stopped by to visit Rendon, who had told him “he was hiding out from police because of the shooting.”

Rendon was arrested on complaints of gang association and discharging a firearm from a vehicle.
