Mariners place Paxton on DL

The Seattle Mariners have placed ace James Paxton on the 10-day disabled list with a forearm bruise, one day after the left-hander was struck by a line drive.

Paxton was facing the third batter in the first inning Tuesday night when Jed Lowrie lined a ball back up the middle, hitting the pitcher hard. Paxton walked toward second base in obvious pain as a team trainer and manager Scott Servais rushed onto the field.

Paxton was replaced by Felix Hernandez.

After the game, Paxton told reporters he felt tightness in his arm and could not grip a baseball. X-rays were negative. Paxton is 10-5, including a no-hitter against Toronto, and a 3.68 ERA.

Hernandez, who allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings, is likely to take Paxton's turn in the rotation.

Manziel placed under concussion protocol

Johnny Manziel was placed under the Canadian Football League's concussion protocol Wednesday.

The Montreal Alouettes quarterback was hit at the goal line last weekend, leading to a fumble that a teammate recovered for a touchdown in a 24-17 loss at Ottawa. Manziel completed the game, but missed practices Tuesday and Wednesday as the team prepares to play at Edmonton on Saturday night.

Coach Mike Sherman said that if Manziel is able to practice Thursday there's a chance he could play against Edmonton, but that appears unlikely.

Djokovic advances in Cincinnati

Novak Djokovic overcame an upset stomach and a sluggish first set Wednesday, beating Adrian Mannarino 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the second round before heavy rain halted afternoon matches at the Western & Southern Open.

The 10th-seeded Djokovic is trying to win his first Cincinnati title to become the first to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 trophies.

There was one notable upset in the men's bracket before the rain arrived. Robin Haase beat third-seeded Alexander Zverev 5-7, 6-4, 7-5 for his first victory against a Top 10 opponent since he beat Zverev last November.
