Yukon elementary school earns award
Parkland Elementary School was honored recently with the Action Based Learning School of the Year award by Healthy Schools Oklahoma.
Each year, the honor is awarded to one school that has displayed dedication and creativity to the Healthy Schools Oklahoma program, specifically with its Action Based Learning lab and adding movement for students throughout the school day.
Action Based Learning is based on the brain research that supports the link of movement and physical activity to increased academic performance.
During the Healthy Schools Oklahoma’s Summer Health Institute, teachers and administrators engaged with one another, as well as various speakers and innovators from across the country, regarding the best ways to educate students about living healthy lifestyles and making good choices about nutrition and fitness.
Healthy Schools Oklahoma has been in existence since 1997. The organization, formally known as Schools for Healthy Lifestyles, has worked for the past two decades to spread its mission of promoting and maintaining healthy lifestyles among students, families and educators. Its five focus areas include: Physical activity and fitness; nutrition education and awareness; tobacco use prevention; safety and injury prevention; and oral health education.
The group serves 65 elementary schools across the state and partners with more than 50 public and private health-related organizations to accomplish its mission. For more information, go to www.healthyschoolsok.org or contact 405-606-8435.
McGuinness upgrades audio system
A new audio system has been installed in the Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School music room thanks to a grant from the Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma and the Bobby Dean Little Trust.
Two high-frequency speakers, an amplifier, a mixer and a lavalier system were bought and installed with the $2,500 grant received.
The teachers now will be able to connect wirelessly to the sound system with their laptops and iPads.
The audio upgrade will provide an improved environment for the school’s music appreciation, band, choir and orchestra classes, a news release stated.
