Aztecs’ running back out with broken collarbone

-

San Diego State says junior running back Juwan Washington has a broken collarbone and is expected to be out for six weeks.

Washington was hurt in Saturday night's home overtime victory against Eastern Michigan. The Aztecs (3-1) are off Saturday before opening Mountain West Conference play at Boise State on Oct. 6.

Washington has 560 yards and five touchdowns on 99 carries. The Aztecs were hoping he'd follow D.J. Pumphrey and Rashaad Penny as a 2,000-yard rusher.

His replacement, sophomore Chase Jasmin, has 244 yards and one score on 43 carries.

Suspended players reinstated at North Carolina

North Carolina is nearly back at full strength for its game at No. 16 Miami with the return of several players who were suspended for selling team-issued shoes.

Seven players — including quarterback Chazz Surratt and receiver Beau Corrales — are eligible to make their season debut Thursday against the Hurricanes. And after being down as many as 11 players in the opener against California, UNC will be down just one — starting defensive end Tomon Fox — for the shoe issue this week.

"I'm looking forward to seeing them all, because we need every single one of them," UNC coach Larry Fedora said.

UNC (1-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) announced in August that 13 players would miss time for the NCAA secondary violations, with nine set to miss four games.

Most of those players were due back this week from the start, though the duration of some suspensions changed once Hurricane Florence forced the cancellation of UNC's Sept. 15 home game against No. 13 UCF.

Former Bulldogs’ coach on opposite sideline

Mississippi State suddenly has a lot bigger problems than former coach Dan Mullen coming to town.

The 23rd-ranked Bulldogs and their fan base have been looking forward to Saturday's game against Florida for several months, ever since Mullen left Starkville after nine seasons to become the Gators' head coach. But instead of going into the weekend undefeated Mississippi State is smarting after a 28-7 road loss to Kentucky .

The setback certainly put a damper on firstyear coach Joe Moorhead's honeymoon in Starkville. And he will certainly face more difficult questions if he can't beat the man he replaced on Saturday.

SEC fines Kentucky for fans’ celebration

The Southeastern Conference has fined Kentucky $100,000 for violating its policy on access to the competition area following the Wildcats football upset victory over Mississippi State.

The school was fined for a second offense, its first since a 2014 football game against South Carolina. Fans gathered in the south end zone of Kroger Field after Saturday's 28-7 win over the then-No. 14 Bulldogs and celebrated with players.

Kentucky improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the SEC with the win and is ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press Top 25.

Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart said Tuesday the school is committed to following the rules and avoiding future penalties. He says, "We ask our fans to remain in the stands to celebrate the victories our team is working to earn."
