Prosecutor­s drop charge against Astros’ closer

Canadian prosecutor­s dropped a domestic assault charge on Tuesday against Houston Astros closer Roberto Osuna, who agreed to stay away from the alleged victim for one year and continue counseling.

Osuna, formerly with the Toronto Blue Jays, was charged with assault in May. The 23-year-old player was suspended without pay for 75 games for violating Major League Baseball's domestic violence policy, and the Blue Jays dealt him to Houston on July 30.

Speaking in court, prosecutor Catherine Mullaly said the complainan­t, who lives in Mexico, had made clear she would not travel to Toronto to testify against Osuna.

Osuna was met with boos when the Astros beat the Blue Jays in Toronto on Monday. The Astros have said they would not tolerate another incident involving their closer and that the organizati­on is committed to supporting victims of domestic violence.

Larkin doesn't want to be Reds’ manager

Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin is not a candidate to become the Cincinnati Reds manager.

President of Baseball Operations Dick Williams said Tuesday that Larkin prefers to remain in his current role of helping develop minor leaguers.

A Cincinnati native, Larkin spent his entire 19-year big league career with the Reds.

Manager Bryan Price, who was fired on April 19 along with pitching coach Mack Jenkins after a 3-15 start. Bench coach Jim Riggleman was promoted to interim manager and Danny Darwin was brought up from Triple-A Louisville to replace Jenkins. Louisville manager Pat Kelly took over as Cincinnati's bench coach.

Kelly, third base coach Billy Hatcher and first base coach Freddie Benavides were interviewe­d during Cincinnati's series at Miami last weekend, Williams said. Riggleman and former Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell, who joined the Reds in spring training as a scout, also will be interviewe­d, according to Williams.

Ohtani to have Tommy John surgery

Los Angeles Angels twoway rookie Shohei Ohtani will have Tommy John surgery next week. The Angels confirmed Ohtani's long-expected decision on elbow ligament replacemen­t Tuesday. Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the surgery in Los Angeles. Ohtani won't be able to pitch for the Angels in 2019, but he likely could hit at some point early next season.

Hicks sidelined with hamstring woes

Aaron Hicks should recover from a tight left hamstring in a few days and return to the New York Yankees lineup this week, according to manager Aaron Boone.

Hicks left Monday night's 4-1 win over Tampa Bay in the fourth inning, one inning after aggravatin­g the hamstring while running to first and avoiding a double play.

Marlins-Pirates makeup game canceled

The makeup game the Miami Marlins were supposed to play at the Pittsburgh Pirates on the day after the regular season ends has been canceled.

The cancellati­on was announced Tuesday, after both teams have been eliminated from playoff contention.
