McGuinness faces tough stretch

Bishop McGuinness has a daunting schedule in the final two weeks of the regular season with matchups against Guthrie and Carl Albert.

Looking at the schedule during the preseason, McGuinness football coach

Bryan Pierce knew the challenge was different from years past.

The Irish had to wait until Weeks 9 and 10 for the biggest games of the regular season, battles with District 5A-2 rivals No. 7 Guthrie and No. 1 Carl Albert.

In the past, those games provided motivation midway through the season. Now, the Irish had to remain focused in other ways.

McGuinness (7-1 overall, 5-0 district) has won by 24 or more points each week since a Week 2 overtime win against Tulsa Kelley and seven straight games since a Week 1 loss to Del City.

Along the way, the schedule has allowed the Irish to find its way with sophomore quarterback Luke Tarman and star junior running back

Dominic Richardson.

Richardson rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns, returned a kickoff for a touchdown and caught seven passes for 68 yards last week in a 32-7 win over Piedmont.

It was a good test for Richardson and the Irish heading into Friday’s game at Guthrie.

“He’s obviously full strength,” Pierce said. “And I think you’re going to see special things from him going through the rest of the season and on into the playoffs.”

Tulsa Edison RB continues breakout season

Tulsa Edison junior running back Sevion Morrison’s past three weeks have been nothing short of spectacular.

Last week, Morrison rushed for 429 yards and seven touchdowns in a 57-37 win over McAlester, breaking his own school single-game record for TDs.

This comes a week after he broke Spencer Tillman’s Tulsa Edison single-season record of 1,597 yards. And that was a week after he rushed for 419 yards and six TDs.

Morrison, who is 5-foot-11 and 187 pounds, is now up to 1,121 yards and 17 TDs in the last three games. On the year, Morrison has rushed for 2,015 yards and 25 TDs on 159 carries. He’s averaging 12.7 yards per carry.
