Tulsa hopes to keep momentum
TULSA — After two months of coming up short, the University of Tulsa experienced a breakthrough last week against UConn.
Can a blowout victory carry momentum over into this week? The Hurricane (2-7, 1-4) visits Memphis (5-4, 2-3) on Saturday in a battle of teams from the American Athletic Conference’s West Division.
“We have a really good conference,” TU running back Corey Taylor II said. “Everyone is a difficult opponent . ... If we can get a win in Memphis, it would spark our confidence even more and it would be a great thing for us as a program.”
A 638-yard outing against the Huskies served as validation for TU’s offense, which struggled significantly during the seven consecutive losses before catching fire in the second and third quarters of the 49-19 victory.
Quarterback Seth Boomer had his most efficient outing, and the Hurricane run game racked up 470 yards.
“Obviously we’ve got to have more of that more often, but it was a good spark and I’m very proud of our team for the way they have continued to stay resilient and battle and work,” coach Philip Montgomery said.
Because of the streakending win, TU has renewed hope for its remaining three games despite being a double-digit underdog against the Tigers.
“If we just go out with same mentality and approach, I know our coaches have a good game plan for us and will put us in the best position for us to be successful,” offensive lineman Chris Ivy Jr. said. “Just carrying that momentum is the biggest thing.”
