Scouting report
Record: 8-1 overall, 6-1 Big 12
Best player: Quarterback Will Grier ranks third nationally in passing yards per attempt and passing efficiency, ranking behind only Heisman Trophy front-runners Tua Tagovailoa and Kyler Murray in both categories. His 2,961 yards are the nation’s ninth most, but the eight quarterbacks in front of Grier have played 10 games to his nine. He ranks fourth nationally in passing yards per game and fifth in touchdown passes. With the exception of the Mountaineers’ loss to Iowa State, Grier has thrown for at least 332 yards in every game.
The case for the Mountaineers: Grier and West Virginia’s offense present enough reasons for concern, but the Mountaineers’ defenders are no slouches. West Virginia ranks second in the Big 12 in rushing defense, passing defense, total defense and scoring defense; the only team to beat the Mountaineers, Iowa State, ranks first in three of those four categories. OSU’s defense, meanwhile, ranks seventh at best in the league in those stats, so Grier could have a field day.
The case for the Cowboys: OSU seems to be at its best when facing its toughest competition. The Cowboys are 2-1 against ranked opponents this season, the lone loss being this weekend’s 48-47 defeat against Oklahoma that could’ve swung either way. OSU will likely be the underdog again against the Mountaineers, but quarterback Taylor Cornelius has thrived in that role, completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 1,065 yards with 11 total touchdowns to no interceptions in the Cowboys’ matchups with ranked teams Boise State, Texas and OU.
