Louisville fires Bobby Petrino

Louisville has fired coach Bobby Petrino with two games left in a spiraling season that includes five blowout losses in which the Cardinals allowed at least 50 points.

The school announced Petrino’s dismissal Sunday morning with a statement from athletic director Vince Tyra, who said he “did not have the confidence” the coach could turn things around next season.

Petrino departs with a 77-35 mark in two stints with Louisville, which is 2-8 this season.

Notre Dame to start QB Book against Syracuse

Ian Book’s stay on third-ranked Notre Dame’s sideline will be a short one.

Coach Brian Kelly announced Sunday that the 6-foot, 208-pound junior quarterbac­k, who led the Irish (10-0) to six straight victories before suffering a rib injury in a 31-21 victory at Northweste­rn two weeks ago, will practice Tuesday and, if there are no setbacks, reclaim his starting spot over Brandon Wimbush.

Notre Dame plays No. 12 Syracuse at Yankee Stadium next Saturday.

Kuchar wins Mayakoba Golf Classic

Matt Kuchar ended more than four years without a PGA Tour victory Sunday by closing with a 2-under 69 and holding up through a few nervous moments down the stretch to win the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Danny Lee finished with two pars for a 65. Kuchar rolled in a 3-foot par putt to win by one shot.

Singh wins final event, Langer claims Schwab Cup

Vijay Singh rallied from six shots behind with his career-best round on the PGA Tour Champions, a 10-under 61 that gave him a four-shot victory in the Charles Schwab Cup Championsh­ip and gave Bernhard Langer the season title and $1 million annuity.

Langer won the Schwab Cup for the fifth time, and fourth time in the last five years.

Busch wins, advances to championsh­ip

Kyle Busch won for the eighth time this season to tie Kevin Harvick for the most victories this season and set up a head-to-head battle for the championsh­ip.

Busch’s victory at ISM Raceway outside of Phoenix was the final qualifying event for next week’s finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

The final four will be NASCAR’s Big Three of Kyle Busch, Harvick and reigning series champion Martin Truex Jr., as well as Joey Logano.

Rockets GM denies report that Carmelo will be waived

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey is denying a report that says Carmelo Anthony’s time with the team will end soon.

Anthony was out for the second straight game on Sunday night with an illness.

The New York Times had a sourced report on Sunday saying that Anthony has been notified that he will soon be waived. When asked about that report before Sunday night’s game, Morey said: “that’s inaccurate.”

Wade taking more time to be with wife, newborn daughter

Dwyane Wade says he is going to miss at least another week before returning to the Miami Heat, while ensuring that his wife and newborn daughter are doing well enough for him to resume playing.

Wade and his wife, actress Gabrielle Union-Wade, became parents of a daughter born via a surrogate on Wednesday.
