Town hall will fo­cus on po­lice, youth

A town hall meet­ing fo­cused on bridg­ing the gap be­tween youth and po­lice is sched­uled from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Nor­man Pub­lic Schools Ad­min­is­tra­tion Build­ing, 131 S Flood Ave. Food will be pro­vided. The event is held in part­ner­ship with the Nor­man Po­lice Depart­ment, Bridges and the Cit­i­zens Po­lice Academy Alumni of Nor­man.

The Nor­man Po­lice Depart­ment be­gan a part­ner­ship with The Po­lice Train­ing In­sti­tute by be­gin­ning its Fight Crime: In­vest in Kids Pro­gram in Oc­to­ber. The part­ner­ship pro­vides the agency with ad­di­tional tools that can as­sist with its daily in­ter­ac­tions with the youth in the Nor­man com­mu­nity.

In­for­ma­tion from the town hall meet­ing will be paired with re­search col­lected through site vis­its, lis­ten­ing ses­sions, and ride-alongs to craft a new law en­force­ment cur­ricu­lum fo­cus­ing on top­ics such as ado­les­cent brain de­vel­op­ment, de-es­ca­la­tion skills and tech­niques, im­plicit bias bar­ri­ers, and trauma-in­formed re­sponse pro­to­cols.
