Alexander helps the Chargers find early success

The impressive play of star sophomore Trey Alexander has helped Heritage Hall have a solid start this season.

Aspects of Trey Alexander's daily life look a lot like many high school athletes.

The 15-year-old studies hard at Heritage Hall, maintains a high GPA and works hard at practice and in games for the Chargers on the basketball court.

And then there's his cryotherapy chamber sessions. The 6-foot-5 guard subjects his body to freezing temperatures for up to three minutes in hopes of keeping his legs fresh.

"It's a bit weird," Alexander said. "But you definitely feel rejuvenated after."

Cryotherapy aside, Alexander is not your normal high school athlete. The sophomore-helped lead Heritage Hall to a Class 4A championship last year, producing a fantastic finals finish against Kingfisher in which he scored 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting.

But before he had even played a game for Heritage Hall, Alexander was already on the recruiting radar of college coaches. He sported an Oklahoma State offer before his firstever varsity game.

After an offseason of playing basketball on the national summer circuit, including stops at the Pangos All-American Camp, the Elite 14 Showcase and the Adidas Gauntlet, Alexander now has offers from Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and is in talks with dozens of other college programs across the country.

"I feel very blessed," Alexander said. "It’s been fun and stressful, but I'm just enjoying it. I know it’s all because of God and the hard work and ability that God gave me."

Heritage Hall coach Chris Hamilton said Alexander has remained humble and hard working despite the success he's seen at such a young age.

"Trey is so unselfish," Hamilton said. "I’ve asked him to step up in a couple areas and he's responded great. He could go out and get 30 every night, but he wants to get 10 assists and 10 rebounds.

"He has a knack for making the right play."

Heritage Hall is off to a fast start this season behind the play of Alexander and senior forward Will McDonald. The Chargers will have a slightly new cast of characters as they try to repeat in Class 4A, but Hamilton likes his team's makeup.

"We are further along than we were last year," Hamilton said. "This thing is not going to be easy, but our guys are bought in."

And Alexander is leading the way in that regard.

"He's a kid off the court, and he cares about school and his studies," Hamilton said. "But when he steps between those lines, he's ultracompetitive."
