Oklahoma City, USAO atop NAIA softball preseason poll

Oklahoma City University earned the top spot in the 2019 NAIA Softball Coaches’ Top 25 Preseason Poll released Tuesday while reigning national champion University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma is picked second.

OCU, which finished 53-9 last season and finished fourth in the country, had 521 points. USAO, which finished 57-5 last season, had 495 points. USAO was ranked 25th in the preseason poll last year before winning the national championsh­ip.

Both schools are members of the Sooner Athletic Conference. No other Oklahoma team received votes in the poll.

Oklahoma Christian hires Mickey Tettleton as assistant coach

Former major league baseball player and two-time All-Star Mickey Tettleton will be an assistant coach at Oklahoma Christian, head coach Lonny Cobble announced Tuesday.

Tettleton, 58, grew up in Oklahoma City and attended Southeast High School. He played at Oklahoma State before being drafted in the fifth round by the Oakland A's in 1981.

He broke into the big leagues in 1984 and retired from pro baseball in 1997 after a career that included stints with the A's, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers.

Energy FC signs defender

Energy FC have signed defender Amer Sasivarevi­c to a contract for the 2019 season.

Sasivarevi­c was a standout at Grand Canyon University before being drafted by FC Dallas in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft. Sasivarevi­c also played for Lane United FC of USL League Two in 2016. Energy FC begins the 2019 season on the road against expansion club El Paso Locomotive FC on March 9. The first home match will be against Las Vegas Lights FC on March 16 at Taft Stadium.

Trout fishing clinic set Friday at Putnam City High School

A free trout fishing clinic will be held Friday from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Putnam City High School gymnasium, 5300 NW 50.

Staff and volunteers from the Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation Department and the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservati­on (ODWC) will provide tips on the best bait and equipment for trout fishing plus instructio­n on knot-tying and fish cleaning.

To register, call the H.B. Parsons Fish Hatchery at (405) 297-1426. The city's annual rainbow trout season at the Dolese Youth Park Pond, 5105 NW 50, is now open and runs through Feb. 28.

Fly Tying Extravagan­za scheduled Saturday

The annual Fly Tying Extravagan­za will be Saturday at the Creek County Fairground­s near Sapulpa from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Fly fishing guide Duane Hada will speak on fly fishing for smallmouth bass in the Ozarks. There will be fly tying demonstrat­ions and raffles for prizes.
