Self expects player to return

Kansas coach Bill Self says he believes, at some point, senior guard Lagerald Vick will return from his indefinite leave of absence and rejoin the Jayhawks' basketball team.

“It's not going to be tomorrow by any stretch, or Monday, or probably soon after that. So we need to make sure that we support him, but on the flip side coach the guys we've got,” Self, KU's 16th-year coach, said Friday at a media session held in advance of Saturday's home contest against Oklahoma State.

Self, in announcing Vick's leave of absence Thursday night, said Vick needed to address “some personal matters that require his immediate attention.”

Flores hires staff in Miami

Former Colts and Lions coach Jim Caldwell has been hired by new Dolphins coach Brian

Flores as assistant head coach and quarterbac­ks coach.

Caldwell was among 16 members of Flores' staff announced Friday. The group includes new offensive coordinato­r Chad O'Shea and defensive coordinato­r Patrick Graham, both former Patriots assistants.

Flores joined the Patriots in 2004 and was the defensive playcaller for this season's Super Bowl championsh­ip team. He became the Dolphins' coach on Monday.

Maryland QB adds name to transfer portal

Kasim Hill, Maryland's starting quarterbac­k through much of the 2018 season, announced on Twitter that he has entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal as he considers other schools to complete his college career.

With Hill putting his name in the database, other schools will know he is interested in transferri­ng, and those programs are allowed to contact the junior.

"I have not made any final decisions on leaving Maryland and my decision to enter the portal is not a criticism of the University or of the staff," Hill tweeted Friday, adding that he was making his announceme­nt to avoid the news coming out via media reports.

Diamondbac­ks ink pitchers to minor league deals

Right-hander Ricky Nolasco and lefty Marc Rzepczynsk­i have agreed to minor league contracts with the Arizona Diamondbac­ks and will report to big league spring training.

Nolasco, 36, has not pitched in the major leagues since 2017 with the Los Angeles Angels. He was released by Kansas City in spring training last year after allowing eight runs, five hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings in one start and one relief appearance.

Nolasco is 114-116 with a 4.56 ERA in 312 starts and 18 relief appearance­s over 12 big league seasons.

Rzepczynsk­i, 33, had a 6.97 ERA in 23 games last year with Seattle and Cleveland, allowing 11 runs eight earned 16 hits and 10 walks over 10 1/3 innings in 23 relief appearance­s, He is a 10-year big league veteran, primarily as a reliever.
