NCAA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS NOTEBOOK
Five All-Americans fail to place
Oklahoma State entered the season with seven returning AllAmericans. Amazingly, five did not place in the 2019 tournament. Joe
Smith and Jacobe Smith were eliminated in consolations. Boo Lewallen
( 149) was lost to a season- ending injury.
Chandler Rogers (165) lost to Joe Smith in ranking matches. Brock fell one win short of placing. He, Rogers and Joe Smith are two- time All-Americans.
Moran makes big comeback
Stillwater's Tristan
Moran ( 26- 11), who transferred from OSU to Wisconsin, staged a phenomenal comeback in the third consolation round. He trailed North Carolina State's Jamel Morris 10-0 then reeled off 16 straight points to win 16-10. He fell just short of placing with a 7-6 loss to Minnesota's
Mitch McKee (23-6)
Attendance good
Attendance for the first four sessions at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh exceeded 72,000, ensuring that the six-session total will easily eclipse 100,000.
Hot topic
Hot topic of discussion with coaches, fans and media was the decision to seed all wrestlers at all weights -– from 1 to 33. Seemingly an ill-advised move for several reasons, could be reviewed during off- season meetings of the NCAA Wrestling Committee.
