The Oklahoman

`Tis the season for allergies

- By OU Medicine

Ear, nose and throat specialists at OU Medicine often treat adults and children for allergies. Symptoms may be mild to severe, including runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, red, itchy and watery eyes and swelling around the eyes. Seasonal allergies are the immune system's exaggerated response to pollen and other airborne substances. Almost anything — weeds, grass, tress or mold — may trigger seasonal allergies. OU Medicine's allergy specialists agree that Oklahoma's notorious winds put residents at higher risk for allergy-related illnesses. The wind knows no geographical boundaries and brings allergens directly to your ears, eyes and nose from as far away as Arizona, Kansas, Texas or Arkansas. Unlike colds that worsen then resolve, allergy symptoms are usually of the same quality or intensity with each exposure. Fever isn't typical with allergies, but allergies can contribute to development of serious, recurrent or chronic infections of the paranasal sinuses. Discolored nasal drainage, cough, hoarseness

Tips for allergy sufferers

• Wash bedding regularly. Use pillow and mattress covers that block allergens. • Bathe and wash hair after outdoor activities. Skin, hair and clothes collect allergens, extending your exposure when you are indoors. • Use air conditioning and heating to filter the air you breathe. • Keep pets outside. • In your home, use less fabric that can hold allergens. Consider materials other than carpet for flooring, and wood or vinyl blinds instead of draperies.

and headaches are all symptoms of sinusitis. Many prescription and over-the-counter oral treatments are available in addition to allergy shots and inhalers.OU Medicine's allergy specialists often prescribe allergy drops— a liquid placed under your tongue— rather than allergy shots for building up an immunity to allergens. An allergy specialist can help determine the most effective treatment options.
