Oklahoma City is the 27th largest city in the nation with a population nearing 650,000, according to new U. S. Census Bureau estimates of incorporated areas.

The city itself — not the seven-county metropolitan area — grew by nearly 6,000 residents between July 2017 and July 2018. It grew 12% from the 2010 census, when the population was 579,999. Last July, the city's population was estimated at 649,021.

The Oklahoma City population was slightly below that of Memphis, Tennessee, and slightly higher than that of Las Vegas.

New York City is the nation's largest city, with 8.4 million people, followed by Los Angeles with 3.9 million.

Tulsa ranked 47th in the nation, with 400,669 people. Norman was the 223rd largest, with 123,471 people.

Broken Arrow was 278th, with a population of 109,171, and Edmond was 351st, with a population of 93,127.

The next official census is in 2020. In between the headcounts done every 10 years, the U.S. Census Bureau conducts annual population estimates.

The estimates released Thursday show growth in some cities around Oklahoma City, while others have been relatively flat.

Edmond picked up 1,300 people between 2017 and 2018 and has gained nearly 12,000 since 2010. Yukon has gained about 5,200 residents since the 2010 census and now has 27,534 people.

Moore has gained about 7,000 people since 2010 and has a population of 62,103. Mustang, Piedmont, Midwest City and El Reno have gained residents at a healthy clip, while Del City, Warr Acres and The Village have seen only modest gains.

Stillwater, home of Oklahoma State University, crossed the 50,000 mark last year and has 50,391 residents, making it the 771st largest city in the nation.
